This project is the re-design of the interior spaces of the African academy drafting collage. The existing structure consists of three double level wings. Currently the third and last wing is not in use and is not accessible. The
client expressed their need to redesign the interior spaces and leave the exterior façade untouched. The collage is looking to expand its student intake and redefine the atmosphere for students to feel more welcome and connected.
In addition, I identified that there was an issue with the lack of natural lighting and this became a major focal point in the design as each wing had fenestration on the two longest sides but currently the interior spaces
are divided causing an issue with natural lighting and air circulation. My main goal for this project was to improve the atmosphere that the students are in. I achieved this by dedicating the adjoining sections between each
wing to student lounges and informal gathering spaces this is fitting as these spaces already act as the main path of travel as the stairs are there. The desired effect from this would be that before and after class students
have a space to congregate and be students. Every class room, lecture room and office have a glazed curtainwall parallel to the length of each wing as to allow the light from windows on both sides to illuminate the space and
reduce the issue with natural lighting. This also has a secondary effect of connecting each individual space to the rest of the structure impacting the mindsets and work ethics of the students.
