This project is based in the south of Johannesburg. The client has a detached store room in the back of the property and was looking for options to renovate the space into either a small rental house or a mancave. The client requested
a design for the space to be a 3 bedroom with a small kitchen and lounge. The space is 42m squared and would require effective space utilisation to accommodate his wishes the client is willing to add or remove windows and doors
to the structure but does not want to expand the space. There was no major design inspiration except that of tiny house movement. Unfortunately, in order make a efficient space there was not allot of room for typical tiny house
systems. A design challenge that I faced was the placement oof incoming and outgoing utilities as the main water and electrical connection are placed in the front of the structure and the sewer connection at the back of the
structure. This forced the bathroom and kitchen to be grouped together. I decided that the bathroom did not require a bathtub for space saving and all the plumbing would exit the north facing wall. The kitchen would be a single
wall kitchen and would only have base cabinets. Doorways and the dead space created by them was a design issue and would require alternative methods such as bi-folding doors and sliding doors both of which I used in the design.
As there was a lack of space I decided to remove a 45-degree section from the bed rooms to create a false walkway and made access easier along with the use of bi-folding doors to further reduce wasted space.
